Welcome to round 1 of season 2010
At last, we’re back for a season of Rugby.
And how good is this, it’s a 17 round season this year.
From what we have seen at training every one is well and truly ready to get back into it. Unfortunately there were few opportunities for a practice round this year and the one that was organised was rained out, so there are plenty of kids out there who can’t wait for Saturday to come around.
As reported in the first newsletter Surfers Rugby continues to grow with registrations now exceeding 240 children. We have teams in all age groups from U6 through to U16. Most age groups being represented by two teams, the “Dolphins” and the “Porpoises”.
The administration and co ordination of the teams, registrations and equipment has been a difficult process for our small team of volunteers; we trust we have got it right by today. A big thanks to everyone involved with Junior Rugby here at Surfers.
But as you would expect we could still do with a few extra hands. Please ask your child’s Coach, or any member of the committee if you can be of assistance, just a few minutes of your time would be great, even if it’s just the oranges at half time for your child’s team.
Team Jerseys will be distributed to Coaches / Team Managers Friday night after training. Pre ordered shorts and socks will also be distributed to your Team Manager Friday night.
For those who did not pre order, Kymberley will be available in the Col Macdonald room Friday night only to assist with your purchase. Please note you will not be able to purchase shorts or socks on Saturday morning.
We are proud to say we have most teams running out in the “Senior” style Jersey this year and hope to be able to complete the renewal for all teams by next season.
Presidents update – Graham Kenealy
Welcome back to Surfers rugby for 2010. With player numbers at an all time high, we are all looking forward to an exciting new season.
My aim this year is to make significant improvements to both the playing levels and also the social scene. With a new enthusiastic committee on board, we will look at improving coaching levels through all the grades, and in particular, ensuring the junior players have the opportunity to increase their playing skills.
On the social side, several events will be planned to get ALL the club involved, both seniors and juniors. One event we will be looking to have is a ‘Fathers & Sons’ game day which we can hopefully have on an annual basis. We welcome any feedback from you, the parents and players, as to what you would like to see happen in the way of social events so please contact us – Remember, we are all here to have FUN.
Good luck to all the players for the new season.
Graham Kenealy Club President
Seniors update – Wayne Couper
Our Senior teams are looking good for season 2010 also. Player numbers are well up with some new recruits and the return of regular players across all teams.
We have well over 100 registered players on the books and have entered 2x Friday night 4th grade, + 1 each 3rds, 2nds and 1st grade teams We welcome several new recruits to the club, including Fijian flyer, Joe Bolo, quite a few Kiwis including Matt Boobyer, Irishman, Bernard Smyth, a few Aussies including Paddy Deloharys & players returning to the fold, including past 1st grade premiership winner Danny Tong. Welcome additions to the club coaching ranks are 2nd grade coaches Brent MacDonald and Steve (Snow) Edwards.
This Saturday 20th March, we travel to Toowoomba to tackle the local University team. On Monday 29th March we play Buenos Aries club from Argentina in 3 grades, with the 1st game to kick off at 6pm. Please come along and enjoy watching International players at your home ground.
At Surfers we all about building “club spirit”, I’m sure we would all like to see our children go on to play senior football for the club, so bring the family along to the senior games, support the guy’s and enjoy some great Rugby. Junior Games
Firstly we must make mention of the great effort put in by the teams representing Surfers at last weekends 7’s competition at Casuarina. The under 14’s team were runners up to TSS and the Under 13’s won all 7 matches played including the final against TSS.
Well done and congratulations.
Round 1 is based on the southern draw with most teams playing at home, except for Porpoises U8 playing at Bond, U10 & U11 Porpoises play at Casuarina and due to starting the season with a bye Porpoises U13 and Dolphins U14 have another week to wait. - Sorry guys.
Next week rugby GC have allocated most games to the northern draw with teams playing at TSS, Eagles, Helensvale, Nerang & Coomera. Porpoises U12 go “over the hill” to Beaudesert.
Round 3 will be on April 10th with most teams at home including the Seniors for round 1.
The remainder of the season’s Draw will be published as soon as we are notified by RGC
The current draw is available on our website www.surfersparadiserugby.com.au
Also check out the Gold Coast Rugby website www.rugbygoldcoast.com.au
Please note changes will occur as team numbers settle down for all clubs during the year, refer to the websites regularly for competition updates and other club news.
We need your feedback to continually improve our club and our endeavour to offer members, players, parents and families, the best rugby club on the coast. If you feel you can offer some advice or assistance please contact your child’s Coach, Team Manager or any member of the committee.
Last but not least, I take the opportunity of reminding all players and parents of the Rugby Code of Conduct. The code can be viewed on our website.
Remember we are here for our love of Rugby and for our kids to have fun.
